This week we played Padawan. Padawan is an Eternal format, meaning that any card from any set is available for us to add to our deck, but Padawan has one exception. Every card in our decks must be printed at the common rarity. This adds a bit of a challenge while building a deck, because we can’t use any of the more powerful cards that we usually would in our decks, but all the decks are also evened out at a lower power level. I chose Ahsoka from Legends of the Force as my leader with a green force base.

The Ahsoka leader allows me to give any of my units sentinel when I use the force. I combined that with high health and shielded units that can stick around for multiple hits, allowing me to protect my base and my higher attack units to last longer. Upgrades allowed my already high health units to have more health, and higher attacks to destroy the units they were defending against when they have sentinel. Jedi Guardian (LOF, 49) was the MVP. For five recourses, eight health and four attack, but six when defending, is very hard to beat with one attack.
Game Play and Best Cards
Refugee of the Path (LOF, 242) lets me give any unit with sentinel a shield. This and Mastery (LAW, 129), a three health, three attack upgrade makes the Jedi Guardian almost unstoppable. The Clan Wren Rescuer (SHD, 40) gives any unit an experience token when it’s played, giving any of my sentinels a little boost, making them a little harder to beat, and gives a little more attack power, since units with very high HP tend to have lower attack stats. If something does get through my sentinels, Itinerant Warrior (LOF, 48) lets me heal my base back up.

I found the best turn one play was Secretive Sage (LOF, 61) since it allows me to gain the force early on, the shield lets it stick around, and that gives me an opportunity to upgrade it before it’s destroyed. Plus it already has a good stat line at 2/2/2. Another good card was Protect the Pod (LOF, 128). Since I have a lot of units with high HP, it lets me deal equal damage from one of my units’ remaining HP to an enemy unit, helping me deal with my opponent’s heavy hitters even with smaller attack units.
A Lawless Time Weekly Play Packs Have Arrived – Plus Other Prizing
Our store had not received the weekly play packs for A Lawless Time until now, so this week I opened all the packs I didn’t get to. The cards in these new packs look so much better than the frosted edge cards of the previous sets. The silver borders are uniform with the prize cards from bigger tournaments like the Sector Qualifiers, and are a fine addition to collections of players who don’t usually make it out to Sector Qualifiers. I didn’t pull any huge hits this week, but with 1-2 packs a week, I’m bound to eventually.

In my regular booster packs, I didn’t pull any big hits, but I did hit some good rares. I came fourth place out of seven, but the top four got extra prizes, so I still opened two packs. Not only did I open my prize packs, but the spotlight decks also came into our store this week, so I opened the two packs that came with those too. In one pack I got two rares. This week seemed very bounty hunter themed. I got a hyperspace Latts Razzi (LAW, 39), and I now have a playset of The Master Codebreaker (LAW, 229).

The Spotlight Decks Are Here, and They’re Full of Good Cards
Spotlight decks are two pre-constructed decks that cast a spotlight on two of the new set’s leaders; for A Lawless Time that’s Leia Organa and Jabba the Hutt. Included is a starter deck which has mostly cards from this set but also other sets, a pack to customize that deck with, and a sheet of cardboard damage markers. Personally, I break up my decks and sort them into my collection binders rather than keeping them together. I prefer to build my own decks, and there are some really good cards that I wouldn’t want to keep just with these decks.

The best cards in the decks are definitely the rare cards, but there are also exclusive cards that can only be obtained in their standard version in these decks; those cards are marked with an “S” for special. The card I was most excited to receive in these decks was Sabine’s Masterpiece (JTL, 250) which I now have a playset of, and will be very helpful with all the new multi-aspect cards. I’ve included the deck lists – included on the back of the deck’s bases for easy reconstruction – for both spotlight decks below so you can check them out.

Next week we’re returning to the Premier format, using only the current rotation block. I’m going to be playing the new Jyn Erso leader, and claiming one of the bounties. I’ve already begun experimenting with building her a deck. I started by building her in green for the thematic rebel deck, but it didn’t seem to work too well, so now I’m trying it in red which seems to fit more of the cards I wanted to include. Check back next week to see which colour I choose, and how well I do with it. May the Force Be With You!
